With the Kentucky Derby happening this weekend I felt that a julep was in order for this week's edition of Thursday Night Cocktail. A mint julep is a classic derby drink, but it's always fun to change things up and try a new variation. Southerns take sweet tea every bit as serious as they take their bourbon, so I think this baby is a clear winner!
Ingredients
1/2 cup loosely packed fresh mint leaves
1 lemon, sliced
2 tablespoons sugar
3 cups cold sweetened tea*
1 cup bourbon
Crushed ice
Fresh mint sprigs
Directions
Combine the mint leaves, lemon and sugar in a 2-qt. pitcher. Press mint leaves against sides of pitcher with back of spoon to release flavors. Stir in tea and bourbon. Serve over crushed ice. Garnish with a mint sprig.
*It's best to sweeten the tea while it's still hot. I don't know why that is, but the women who told me was a true southerner, so I'll take her word for it.
Cheers!
